MORE than 320 people have registered objections to new plans to build a housing estate on a former university on Highgate Hill.

The Archway Campus project would see a mix of private and social housing built, following the demolition of Victorian buildings.

The scheme has been at the centre of a planning wrangle since it was bought by developers Seven Capital from Middlesex University.

Originally built in 1897 as a workhouse and infirmary, it was also used by the Whittington Hospital and more recently by Middlesex University. As development plans have stalled, it has been home to a food aid project.

Seven Capital say it wants to “restore historic buildings and introduce sensitively designed new build elements to bring the site forward as a residential-led mixed-use scheme which celebrates the history of the site whilst transforming it for modern day use that will provide benefits to the local community.”

But campaign group Better Archway Forum say the scheme is littered with issues, including a lack of much needed family homes with 57 out of 91 affordable units being either bedsits or one bed flats.

It claims plans for 242 student bedrooms do not reflect a demand and the designs would create homes that lack natural light, open space for residents and would create secluded nooks that would foster anti-social behaviour.

It added the Victorian buildings earmarked for demolition should be refurbished.
