ACTIVISTS say they are “furious” after becoming locked in a dispute with a museum over the use of a historic campaign banner.

The banner, used regularly during the “save the Whittington” campaign in 2010, was donated to Islington Museum several years ago.

Now the group want to use it in an upcoming protest, but Shirley Franklin, who led the original campaign, says the museum are being “stroppy” about lending it back to them.

Ms Franklin said: “I gave it to them in 2022, under the premise that we could use it in the future, but now they’re saying that they don’t have to give it back. I’m furious.”

She added: “It’s imbued with our history, with individuals, the campaigns we went on. They’ve never displayed it once. I didn’t think you hand something over to a museum and they say you can never use it again.”

The Tribune understands that Islington Museum’s position is that Ms Franklin signed a document giving ownership of the banner to the museum. They are open to lending it back to campaigners at a later date.
