A CAMPAIGN group has warned that police deployment of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology is not “strategic, targeted, or intelligence-led” after the “Orwellian” cameras were used to scan the faces of fans arriving at the Emirates on Sunday.

Jasleen Chaggar, from Big Brother Watch, said there was “no justification” to subject football-goers to suspicionless identity checks.

She cited a lack of legislation around the technology and the fact that the Metropolitan Police have no obligation to reveal their specific rationale for the time and location of each deployment.

Deputy assistant commissioner James Hardman said: “The safety of those attending football matches in London is our priority. This is why it is important that we make the best use of available technology to support officers.”
