Victorian ‘time travellers’ in Selby’s department store pay tribute to the area’s history as a shopping destination in the 19th century

VICTORIAN time travellers took to the streets of Holloway last week as part of a celebration of the neighbourhood’s past, present and future.

Organised by the Holloway Neighbourhood Group, the day of activities featured actors from the National Youth Theatre in Holloway Road dressed in pleated skirts and hats in tribute to the area’s history as a shopping destination in the 19th century – when long-standing department store Selby’s was first established.

More than 200 residents joined in for the day, which also featured magic shows at the Odeon and a tea party in the Old Fire Station where HNG is headquartered.

“In true Holloway fashion, no one batted an eyelid,” said Camilla Bruggen, co-chair of the HNG board.

CEO of HNG Eira Gibson said: “For over 40 years we’ve been at the heart of Holloway, so it was an absolute joy to spill out onto the streets and celebrate such a unique but often overlooked part of Islington.

“As well as all the amazing artists who performed around the town centre, I’m inspired by the children of Pakeman School who had brilliant ideas to turn the empty buildings into things that would add to the area.”

The children’s ideas were presented in an exhibition at the Old Fire Station, focused on the change they want to see in their neighbourhood.

Residents were also encouraged to explore the area with a map made by local artist Dayna Figueroa, that included all the “weird and wonderful novelties” that make Holloway unique.

Ms Gibson added: “Watch this space for more exciting events that celebrate the good things we’ve got and make us proud of where we live.”
