• A RECENT documentary on Radio 4, Cassandras of the Crash, outlined the prescient forecasts of a group of professional economists who predicted the recession that is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Experts interviewed appeared to offer nothing but conventional platitudes by way of future prediction.

So what is the prospect? A continuation of conventional austerity, with stringent monetary regulation, under the Tories or reversal to the capitalist orthodoxy practised by Labour administrations half a century ago, now equally discredited.
