ARTISTS took to the street this week, armed with paint and brushes to brighten up the tarmac near Caledonian Road.

Islington Play Association helped transform Freeling Street into a “pocket park”.

The idea was inspired by the Cally Festival’s use of the space as a “pop-up park” in 2019 and includes plans to install grass, planters and shrubs.

Last year, residents were encouraged to submit their ideas and designs for the pocket park as part of the “Cultivating Cally” project.

Artist Bryony Benge-Abbott said: “The best bit of feedback yet has to be a little boy who shared how excited he was to pretend he’s an insect climbing plants once I’m finished.”

The project is being paid for by the Mayor of London’s £12million Greener City fund.
