‘One-party’ state breeds arrogance
Friday, 30th March 2018
• CLEARLY, Islington Council’s Richard Watts is opposed to electoral reform, and wants to remain leader of his one-party state (Call for voting reform to wipe out Town Hall super-majority, March 16).
Cllr Watts insults his constituents’ intelligence by suggesting we are not interested in having fair representation on the council, saying we had “more day-to-day concerns”.
Let me remind him that in 2011 Islington voted in the Alternative Vote referendum by a two-to-one majority to make our votes count. So, unlike power-hungry politicians we do seem to be able to keep more than one idea in our heads at a time.
There is widespread concern in Islington about how communities are being treated in this one-party state. Untrammeled power has led to arrogance in office.
This has been recorded in the Tribune’s pages by many local groups who have been ignored, brushed aside or steamrollered over, as in our campaign against the siting of the Caledonian Park visitor centre.
