THE landmark Coronet pub on Holloway Road will close in the middle of the Christmas party season – with customers left with little more than a week to grab a final pint in the former cinema.
Bar operators Wetherspoons this week confirmed that it will shut on December 10. The Tribune reported in September that the new owners, DN Property London, plan to keep the building as a pub.
A matchday favourite among Arsenal fans, it is registered as an asset of community value, and any changes to the look of the building would need planning permission. The historic pub was once the Savoy cinema, opened in 1940 in the building designed by William Glenn. The cinema was renamed the ABC in 1962, before finally being called The Coronet in 1979.
The building was also used as a snooker hall and amusement arcade before JD Wetherspoons bought it in 1996 and turned it into a pub.
The company said it wanted to thank loyal customers and staff for their support over the last 27 years.
