Opportunity on May 6

Friday, 19th March 2021

• NOW we’ve left the European Union, the elections for the mayor and assembly in May are Londoners’ only remaining opportunity to elect our political leaders by a fairer, more representative, vote rather than the crude, outdated, FPTP first- past-the-post system.

Proportional representation means every vote counts and every voter knows their ballot will help elect a candidate they actually want to see in office.

In the 2016 mayoral election people gave Siân Berry, the Green Party candidate, more second votes than any other party or candidate.

If they take a small step further this time and put Siân first instead of second London could get a mayor who understands the climate emergency is real and has effective ideas to address it.

The Greens now leading Brighton & Hove council have pledged to collaborate with the other parties to guide the city out of the current crisis, focus on people’s livelihoods and health, and initiate a “green recovery”.

May 6 gives London a chance for a real change too. On the same day, however, residents in two Islington wards will also be voting for new councillors in by-elections.

These will held be under the traditional, FPTP, system where it’s more difficult to reach a representative outcome. But your vote still matters.

In Islington’s Labour “one-party state”, the Green Party believes an effective opposition is important. If you agree, please make your voice heard
on May 6.
