WE may not typically associate Christmas with bursts of physical exercise, but some of the borough’s slightly older residents have shown it can be a “marvellous” way to see in the festive season, writes Anna Lamche.
Those aged 60 and above gathered at the Sobell Leisure Centre in Holloway on Tuesday for a special party exercise session.
They donned their Christmas jumpers and threw themselves into a range of sports, from table tennis to badminton to Zumba.
This was the festive iteration of a regular exercise session that runs for two-and-a-half hours every week. Older people who join the sessions say they reap the rewards, reporting boosts to their physical, social and mental health.
Katie Skea, of Age UK Islington, said: “Many people in Islington have been socially isolated in the last year during the Covid pandemic.
“We’ve been doing everything we can to encourage people to meet up again safely. Back in October, we had a Let’s Get Back Together campaign, working with partners to promote and deliver activities in the community. It was great to be able to mark the festive season with some festive fayre at the Sobell Better Get Together.”
