POLITICIANS voted to close a Finsbury Park primary school last night (Thursday), leaving parents pinning their hopes on keeping it open through academisation.

Families at Pooles Park Primary School in Lennox Road now face a nail-biting wait to find out whether the Department for Education will go ahead and choose a sponsor for the school.

As per official guidelines, the school was issued with an Academy Order in February after it was graded “Inadequate” by Ofsted in November last year. Education chiefs from the DfE met yesterday morning to look at sponsorship options as part of a meeting at the London Region Advisory Board.

Parents have campaigned hard to keep a school on the site. Its grounds house a memorial to a former student who died aged 10 in a car accident.

Islington made the decision to close Pooles Park due to falling rolls and a poor Ofsted inspection last year. A formal consultation on the closure of the school will take place from June 29 to July 27.
