Cyclists, pavement is for walking

Friday, 24th February 2017

• I WOULD like to remind supporters of the cycling lobby that walking erect on two legs has been the prime method of locomotion for Homo sapiens since his evolution. It is a fundamental human facility. We can all do it, even cyclists.

For more than two centuries the streets of our towns and cities have had pavements to provide a safe area for people to walk, separate from the carriageway, which is used by wheeled vehicles.

When the Highway Code was published in the UK it became a requirement for all users of the public highway to be familiar with it. How many cyclists have heard of it, let alone read it? If they did so they would know that cycling on pavements and the ignoring of traffic signals are both forbidden.

If they wish to use the pavement they must dismount and walk.
