A PENSIONER has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young woman found dead in Highbury almost 50 years ago.

The body of 22-year-old Eileen Cotter was discovered in front of a block of garages behind Hamilton Park on June 1, 1974. A post mortem gave the cause of death as strangulation. Although a murder investigation was launched at the time, no charges had ever been brought against anybody and the case had remained unsolved.

The passing of time meant it had been forgotten about by most people until this week. John Apelgren, 79, from south-east London, was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of Ms Cotter’s murder and charged soon after.

He has also been charged with the indecent assault of a different woman – a guest at his wedding – in 1972. Mr Apelgren, a dual UK and South African national, appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday) to confirm his name and address and is now due to appear at the Old Bailey on Monday.
