Perhaps we need more ‘history months’
Friday, 13th August 2021
• I HAVE never previously agreed with your regular correspondent Róisín Ní Ċurráin, but I do think she has a point here, (Irish nurses are being written out of NHS history, August 6).
She goes on to say that, in effect, the important contribution of Irish immigration to the UK continues to be overlooked.
Over the centuries this country has been host to millions of immigrants such as Huguenots and Jews, plus people from places such as Italy, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, SE Asia and, in latter years, eastern Europe.
The biggest group by far are the Irish. Yet every year Black History Month is pushed at us, giving the distinct impression that the most important group of immigrants have come from the Caribbean and Africa.
Perhaps other immigrant groups should push for their own history month!
