LESBIAN and gay campaigners who supported the miners’ strike in the 1980s unveiled a “pits and perverts” poster at a pub during the Pride celebrations on Saturday night.

The new wall display in the King Charles I pub in King’s Cross is a flyer for a fundraising music concert in 1984.

Kevin Franklin, who designed the poster, and Mike Jackson, from the Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners group, helped organise the event.

The original 1984 fundraiser at the Electric Ballroom was headlined by Bronski Beat and drew more than 1,500 people to Camden High Street.

A copy of the same poster is stored in the British Library.

Mr Jackson, whose life story inspired the hit 2014 film Pride, told the Tribune: “I’ve been a big fan of the pub since it was bought out by the customers. It’s my local and everybody there knows who I am and that I featured in the movie. They welcomed me with open arms, as everyone is.

“There are lots of women who feel comfortable going on their own, lots of LGBT people, a great DJ who gets us up dancing. It’s really been this huge success.”

He added: “It was great that Kevin was there.

“He designed the poster but never really benefited from it, now it’s become iconic.” Mr Jackson now focuses his energy on speaking and fundraising for the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign.
