AN new interactive play highlighting the everyday challenges facing disabled people will be performed at Union Chapel on Tuesday.

The event has been organised by Change, Act! Theatre, a community-led group working with neurodivergent and disabled people.

The play, which has been devised by a group of disabled residents and based on their own personal experiences, will be followed by a discussion forum.

The audience will be encouraged to interact with the actors to find potential solutions for issues that are highlighted in the play.

The aim of the event is to provide feedback to the council about the difficulties facing the disabled community and find ways to improve their day-to-day lives.

Co-director Charlotte Hailey-Watts, who founded the theatre company a year ago, said: “We aim to work with policy makers as a result of the event. They’re not the enemies in this scenario but they need to do more.”

The theatre group have been rehearsing in an empty unit in Angel shopping centre as well as at Union Chapel.

Rona Topaz, a professional singer, actor and campaigner for disabled voices, said: “The point of this play is to encourage the audience to find alternative solutions to alleviate oppression.

“We live in an ableist society and we’re just trying to make councillors and local government aware of the issues.”

The project was launched at the end of February with a series of theatre workshops funded by a grant of £2,000 from the Local Initiatives Fund.

Co-director Paul Formosa is hoping to see councillors and council officers in the audience.

“They are all welcome to take part in the forum and work on policy together.

“We’re all on the same side.” he said.
