Put any road layout changes in hold during the pandemic

Sunday, 4th October 2020

• THE pandemic crisis is at present distorting the traffic situation.

People are frightened of using public transport or sharing pavement space with others, who often are not wearing face masks. So using a car seems the safest way to carry on shopping etc.

The proposed drastic and costly interventions under the “people-friendly streets” – what a patronising label – is a project creating a truly hostile environment.

Residents on the east side of Essex Road are extremely upset with delayed or no deliveries, and cars doing three-point turns to get out of the maze of blocked roads, adding noise and pollution. And many old people are now cooped up in their houses.

It may take months for the pandemic to be got under control, so it would be wise and considerate to delay any interference of redesigning the road usage till circumstances get more settled.
