Residents’ fears over late-night noise from new bar
Neighbours on quiet street say their peace will be wrecked

NEIGHBOURS on a quiet residential street in Angel say their peace will be wrecked by plans for a new bar that would open until after midnight.
The owners of West 25, on Packington Street, have asked the council for a licence to play music and serve alcohol into the early hours of the morning from Monday to Sunday. But residents have raised concerns that the late operating hours may threaten the feel of the area.
Justine Flatley, who has been living on the road for six years, said: “It’s not a busy street. I’m worried it’ll become an absolute noise hub and be pretty dodgy because there isn’t much to keep it in check.”
She added: “Within 0.3 miles of my flat, there are eight pubs and clubs. This would be the ninth. We’re losing the balance between daytime and nighttime business.”
The company making the application, The Flamboyant Collective Limited, has as its director, 25-year-old Denzel Azumah Absdulai, who lists his occupation as “business mogul” on Companies House.
Mr Absdulai, who said this is his first solo venture of this nature, wished to reassure neighbours that the venue would not be “rowdy”.
He told the Tribune: “I completely understand where they are coming from, but what we’re aiming to bring to the area, it would be more for the locals. I wouldn’t want to do anything to annoy the neighbours.”
He said the bar would be serving small plates and cocktails, and that the lounge downstairs would be a space for people in the community to hire out for birthdays and poetry readings.
Ms Flatley said she worried about an inexperienced owner’s ability to effectively run the site, but Mr Absdulai said he would be aided by a team well-versed in how to manage a bar.
He said: “I’m young but I’ve been working in the industry since the age of 16. I won’t be running the day to day myself. The general manager, he’s got 10-15 years of experience. I’ve got a very strong team around me.”
