A BELOVED café in Newington Green has closed its shutters after 12 years, with its owner putting the decision down to tightening margins and rising staff costs.

In an Instagram post this week, owner of Lizzy’s on the Green Lizzy Bassham wrote that the “current financial climate” has made it increasingly difficult to keep such a seasonal business alive.

She said: “Today is bittersweet, filled with so much to look back on and celebrate. I have seen your babies born, your children graduate, your parents pass, and your furry friends come and go. I have grown up with you all. I was just 28 years old when I opened the café; now, at 41, I am married and ready to embark on my next adventure.”

In 2020, Ms Bassham crowdfunded more than £21,000 from customers to keep the kiosk open.

She added: “I always said if the world ended, all that would remain would be cockroaches, Cher, and Lizzy’s on the Green. But somewhere deep down, I knew Cher would outlive us all.”
