A BIG-HEARTED schoolboy who raised money for clean water in Africa has been praised for his “persistence, generosity and ingenuity”.

Ross Bergin, who turns 14 tomorrow (Saturday), decided to sell emoji stickers to his fellow pupils at St Aloysius College in Archway when he heard they were raising cash for the Uganda Water Appeal. Ross sold the stickers for 25p to 50p, helping the school’s donation to top £300. The appeal builds pumps in rural villages in Uganda, giving access to clean, safe water.

Ross’s head of year Jordan Neville said: “Ross really went above and beyond here. He is one of the quieter boys but he stepped up and went from class to class doing this. He’s very considerate and thinks of others. Ross is an absolute legend.” Ross was recognised in the annual Jack Petchey awards, named after East End entrepreneur Sir Jack Petchey, which rewards the positive contributions young people make to society.

He was among 75 others from schools across Islington who attended an award ceremony at the Town Hall.

Ross was awarded £250, which he donated to Year 9 fund, meaning it will be spent on rewards and school trips for the whole year group.
