AN estate is battling the council’s decision to “lease off” bin sheds to a private company.
Two-hundred-and-seventy-five residents living in the Finsbury Estate have signed a petition after the council decided to lease their waste storage area to a business.
Finsbury Estate Tenants and Residents Association (FETRA) say these signatures are evidence of the “growing anger on the estate”.
Richard Larcombe, who chairs FETRA, said the council has failed to consult with the 451 households on the estate, arguing this potentially breaches section 105 of the Housing Act.
Mr Larcombe said Finsbury Estate tenants and residents would have rejected the proposals, “had they bothered to speak to us”.
“In response to these failings, a majority of tenants and residents on the estate have made their views known, through our petition,” he added.
“We now expect the council to listen to us, and as part of resolving the problems they have created, to terminate the lease agreement that they have inappropriately given to a private businessman for essential public land on our estate.”
Islington Council insisted the bin sheds has been unused since 2018 and it was not required to consult over the changes.
A spokesperson added: “We are aware that some residents have concerns about the use of the former Finsbury Estate bin store. We are working with the tenants to ensure that the terms of the lease are complied with and we are listening carefully to feedback from residents.”
