THE Tribune’s invitation must have got lost in the post as the prime minister zipped in and out of Highbury on Monday morning – without giving us the chance to ask him anything.
Rishi Sunak did not follow the tradition of past PMs by inviting the Tribune to a set-piece event in the borough, perhaps concerned about what questions we might have up our sleeves.
He used the London Screen Academy in Highbury Grove to hold a press conference during which he extolled the importance of maths for all students.
According to vice-principal Sam Summerson, Mr Sunak met some of the students who talked him through their projects and aspirations. “It was very important to us that he spoke to the students and understood that the industry standard training they get here at LSA isn’t cheap and that we want to continue to provide this resource to our students for free,” he said.
The school, which offers maths and English alongside its film-making curriculum, was set up to carve a pathway into the film industry for underrepresented groups.
Mr Sunak said: “The industry tells us that literacy and numeracy are important for success and so we want the students here to be given the best education that will set them up and prepare them for those jobs.”
Students had hung a banner with the words “Students Against Sunak” on the outside of the school on Tuesday, which was quickly removed.
Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Theresa May, David Cameron and Boris Johnson all invited the Tribune or the Camden New Journal to events during their time as prime minister and took questions.
