Town Hall claims victory as porn channel backs out of ‘sex tour' filming

THE Town Hall tonight (Friday) claimed victory in their mission to stop a porn channel bringing a 'sex tour' to Camden Town, a stunt which has seen a performer promising to have sex with competition winners.
As the New Journal revealed at lunchtime, council lawyers had been exploring ways to stop Rebecca More's so-called 'f***bus' – a van in which she has pledged to have sex with 20 prize winners during a tour of England – from parking up in Camden Town. Adult entertainment channel Television X has already taken Ms More to Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham and had been scheduled to make its latest stop in Camden tomorrow (Saturday).
Police had warned the council that officers were powerless to intervene and Town Hall chiefs had considered taking an eleventh hour legal injunction against the producers in a desperate attempt to prevent Ms More and the tour's organisers from coming to Camden. But, as negotiations continued this afternoon, the company running the channel wrote to Borough Soclitor Andrew Maughan with a pledge not to film in Camden.
Portland TV's managing director Chris Ratcliff said: "Please be advised that we are aware of Camden Council's published views on Rebecca More's Sex Tour of England and can confirm that we do not intend to shoot this series in the London Borough of Camden this weekend or at any other time."
Council leader Councillor Sarah Hayward said: "Whilst we understand that Rebecca More may well be a consenting adult and those who join her in her van may also be consenting – this cheap attempt to boost viewing figures is far from equality in action. As a local authority and more generally as adults we will not stand by and watch the desensitization of young people and the public to this as “normal” healthy behaviour. This glorifies the domination, humiliation of women and reinforces sexual and cultural attitudes that are complicit in rape and sexual exploitation."
She added: "Camden is one of the leading authorities in the country in the promotion of equality and we take a strong stance on violence against women. We have received national recognition for our “kNOw this isn’t love” campaign raising awareness of relationship abuse amongst young people which is a significant social problem in 2014. Rebecca More's Sex Tour completely undermines and damages these vital efforts to promote healthy and safe sexual relationships. We’re not just opposed to this filming in our borough but as normal Londoners we will not tolerate this deeply offensive and dangerous PR stunt.
Conservative leader Councillor Claire-Louise Leyland, one of the councillors who first raised concerns with Cllr Hayward after reading about the tour's schedule in the press, said: "Camden Conservatives have fought hard to raise awareness of abuse, exploitation and trafficking. Television Xs plans to film a 'sex tour' in the back of a lorry in Camden, show little understanding of the caring relationships that we know are needed to build communities in which children can enjoy their childhood, realise their potential and learn to care for others. We are so pleased that this demeaning spectacle will not be happening in Camden and hope this example will help to ensure that people are treated with care, respect and dignity in their communities too."
