THE deputy leader of the Green Party has laid out the case for a universal basic income in a bid to tackle increasing levels of inequality.
Speaking to the Tribune’s online politics channel, Zack Polanski said that a system where everyone in the UK was given a “modest” payment to cover their food, rent and transport to work would lead to improvements in people’s health, wellbeing and sense of community, as well as allowing people to stay in education longer or choose more meaningful work.
“The idea that someone wouldn’t work because they wouldn’t need to is completely wrong. Most people I talk to enjoy the work that they do and they thrive from it,” Mr Polanski said.
“The people who will be worse of are the super rich, multi-millionaires and billionaires because we’ll be charging them more tax.
“I think to most people, unless you’re in that 1 per cent, that just seems sensible”.
