MORE than a thousand children on their summer break braved the rain to join in the fun at Holloway’s annual play day on Wednesday.

The event, organised by charity Islington Play Association (IPA) which promotes outdoor play and runs six of the borough’s adventure playgrounds, saw children descend on Paradise Park.

Children enjoyed go-karting and arts and craft activities and a hokey-cokey circle formed in the rain while a fierce water fight ensued.

The play day has been running for more than 10 years and was one of thousands held across the country to get children out of the house and having fun.

Anita Grant, the chief executive of IPA, said: “In Islington we always make it a big day. The borough’s 12 adventure playgrounds come together with all their children and staff. People are still having a good time in the rain.”

Ms Grant was on hand in the café, serving sandwiches and juice.

The day was part funded by Arsenal in the Community who donated £2,000.

Tiffany, aged six, who waited patiently in the rain to play on the go-kart, said she enjoyed the day while her mother Fiona Keane, 28, said: “It keeps them off the streets and brings them together.”

Chloe, 11, who spent most of her time in the arts and craft tent, added: “It’s been good. This is my first time and I’ll come again next year.”
