People-friendly streets: ‘the traffic restrictions around Angel are terrible’
• A LARGE part of the July 10 Letters was taken up by two comments from people who are active campaigners for one side of a debate on people-friendly streets, (People-friendly streets, yes, but remove dangerous parking too and People-friendly streets are welcome).
Do they speak for the majority of Islington’s residents?
My own view is that the traffic restrictions around Angel are terrible. They have been implemented with no consultation and create huge inconvenience for families, trades people and even emergency services.
By forcing traffic onto already congested main roads, they also further encumber our bus network and potentially increase pollution.
I have no idea how many people agree with me. I am aware of an online petition against the proposals that is gaining momentum.
Islington Council’s planning comments site is overwhelmingly negative. Islington is a diverse borough. What is right for Holloway may not be right for Angel.
At the very least, your Letters section has failed to show balance. At worst you are pandering to a vocal interest group that may be wrong and unrepresentative.
WILLIAM HAWKINS,
