• THOMAS Cooper is a hero for making public the poor state of fire stopping between Spa Green estate flats (Pipes work ‘could spread fire’, August 18).

Cigarette smoke and odours from flats are a well-known problem which residents try to sort out themselves, given council reluctance to deal with the issue.

To paraphrase an email from a council employee: smoke will find its way through cracks and openings in the building fabric. Quite.
