England fans can look forward to another big night on Tuesday when the Lionesses play either Sweden or Belgium in the Euro 2022 semi-finals in Sheffield

TWO inspired substitutions and a rocket shot saw England overcome Spain 2-1 in extra-time last night (Wednesday) to keep their Euro 2022 dream alive.

Spain proved to offer the toughest test yet for the hosts, who looked down and out of this quarter-final in Brighton after Esther Gonzalez’s 54th minute goal.

It was the first goal England had conceded all tournament and while keeper Mary Earps more than justified her selection, the rest of Sarina Wiegman’s players were struggling to make an impact on their stylish opponents.

But just as in the group stages, Wiegman put her trust in Manchester United youngsters Alessia Russo and Ella Toone and the two second-half substitutes delivered.

With six minutes remaining, Russo headed the ball into best friend Toone’s path and the 22-year-old confidently slotted home for the equaliser.

The Amex Stadium was in uproar, but it was nothing compared to the noise that greeted Georgia Stanway’s brilliant shot in the 96th minute.

That goal gave an England side captained once more by Arsenal’s Leah Williamson the platform to see out the tie.

It was the hardest fought win of their European Championship campaign so far and as knockout matches go, it more than lived up to expectations.

As the full-time whistle went, there were tears from Spain, who had come within touching distance of a dramatic victory.

But the night belonged to Wiegman and her never-say-die England players, who will face either Sweden or Belgium in the semi-finals in Sheffield on Tuesday.
