COMMUTERS travelling through Farringdon Station were evacuated by armed police after a suspected gas leak.

National Rail closed the station yesterday (Thursday) at around 9.42am after passengers reported a chemical smell and feeling ill.

The London Fire Brigade attended alongside British Transport Police, London Ambulance Services, and armed police officers. Fourteen people were treated at the scene by the ambulance service, and two were taken to hospital.

A statement from BTP said: “It is believed a small number of people potentially came into contact with an unknown substance which was initially treated as a suspected gas leak. Armed police also attended as part of the emergency response, which is typical during a significant incident and should not cause undue concern to the public in this case. The LFB conducted a sweep of the area and there were no elevated readings of any chemicals detected, and they declared the station safe to reopen at around 11.35am.”
