Streets Kitchen initiative is growing
Friday, 3rd April 2020
• I AGREE with Unite’s Gareth Murphy, (The steps we need to take now, Letters, March 26).
To put up any fight against Covid-19, our front-line workers and volunteers need personal protective equipment and testing and we need properly enforced social distancing and isolation.
I am part of my local COVID-19 mutual aid group, working with the Highgate Newtown crisis centre, and have also set up a Labour Party community response team from my branch.
Like many, I am overwhelmed by the solidarity of our communities and how people are selflessly reaching out to support and assist each other.
My focus is on Streets Kitchen. They have been, and intend to continue, providing an essential service of healthy warm meals for the homeless three times a week near Camden station.
Streets Kitchen have been asking the council for kitchen facilities so they can cook the food in a safe environment and for a drop-in centre for the homeless, and Camden are now offering buildings for this purpose.
Islington, Haringey and other councils have engaged proactively and supported the vital service Streets Kitchen are providing, and I am pleased Camden has started to do so too.
