Student bedsits on car park site

Land in King’s Cross sits above Thameslink train and tube tunnels

A SIX-STOREY block of student flats is being lined up for a car park site in King’s Cross.

Developers Curlew Capital say they are looking to create 123 bedsits on the site in Britannia Street.

The land has long been a target for builders, but until now no one has come up with a viable plan that takes into account the fact the Thameslink train and tube tunnels lie just beneath.

In an application lodged at the Town Hall, they said: “The reason the site has laid vacant for 50-plus years is the London Underground lines, which lie in a cutting along the western boundary and the Thameslink railway line which sits in a shallow tunnel underneath the site.”

To overcome the obstacles, engineers propose sinking new concrete piles into the grounds around the tunnels and using them to prop up a new concrete base.

Curlew said it would not have room to include any affordable housing, but will provide £5.44million as a contribution to housing across the borough.
