North London footballers representing CA Osasuna were crowned LaLiga X champions at Market Road

IT wasn’t just the beating sun that brought a touch of Spain to the borough this summer.

Energetic young footballers also got the chance to battle it out in their own Primera División as they tackled the inaugural LaLiga X Bloomsbury Football League, held at Market Road in Islington.

After four weeks of action-packed matches at the artificial football pitches, it was youngsters from across Camden, Westminster and Islington representing CA Osasuna cheering the loudest after they were crowned champions of the Under-10s league.

Their success was sparked by star striker Axel Trinzoni, who finished as the competition’s top scorer with a blistering 23 goals.

The runners-up were a spirited Valencia side, led by player of the tournament Ayman Mechik.

Up against boys three years older, the talented seven-year-old “showed tremendous tenacity and fair play” throughout, with the other children “raising his arms in recognition” before the winner of the top award was even announced.

Overall 48 players from Bloomsbury Football took part in the showpiece as part of the club’s new partnership with LaLiga – a private sports association responsible for, among other things, organising professional football competitions in Spain, including the Primera División.

As part of the deal, Bloomsbury received a number of official new kits from some of Spain’s top-flight and second division clubs, including CA Osasuna, Valencia, Tenerife and Eibar.

“It was so amazing to see so many of our young people on the pitch proudly wearing the kits of LaLiga teams,” said Charlie Hyman, founder and CEO of Bloomsbury Football.

“Bloomsbury Football exists to ensure that all young people get a chance to experience the life-changing power of football and, with LaLiga’s support, we are really able to celebrate our young people and give them experiences they wouldn’t otherwise have had. We are looking forward to more LaLiga X Bloomsbury Football Leagues in the future.”

Javier Del Rio, UK & Ireland delegate at LaLiga, added: “We’re so proud to support Bloomsbury Football and to collaborate with them on such an incredible initiative.

“The past four weeks have been great to be involved in and we’re proud to have played a role in putting a smile on the faces of these young people.

“We’re looking forward to continuing working with Bloomsbury over the coming years and are excited to support the children of London in pursuing their football dreams.”
