Team Islington athletes shine at the mini-marathon

Team Islington Under-13s Girls

THE capital’s Mini-Marathon marvels rose with the sun on Saturday to test their speed around the streets of Westminster.

In the mix at the TCS Mini London Marathon was a squad of young athletes representing Team Islington. They set off from Horse Guards Parade before running alongside St James’s Park and then racing past Buckingham Palace towards the finish line on The Mall.

The borough’s quickest on the day was Frank Bailey, who completed the 2.6k course in 8 minutes, 14 seconds to take 41st spot out of 141 finishers in the boys’ Under-17s race.

Islington’s Under-15s boys’ team also performed well, with Luke Tomlinson (8.23), Ennio Kaloukian (8.52) and Rory Willis (8.54) all recording sub-nine-minute times, while the borough’s remaining athlete in the race, Joe Skelsey, hit home in 9.12.

Meanwhile, Islington’s quickest athlete in the girls’ races was Kiara Corkin, who clocked a time of 9.47 to finish 27th in the Under-17s age group out of 110 runners.

Team manager Mikael Kiviniemi said he was delighted to see so many youngsters turn out to represent their borough.

He added: “All 21 of the young athletes from Islington did themselves proud on Saturday.
“It’s always a great opportunity to compete in an iconic event against some of the best runners in the country.
