RESIDENTS are calling on the council to finally sort out their estate heating.

Hathersage Court estate residents in Newington Green rebelled against the Town Hall’s move to install prepayment meters – and want the system already in place to be fixed.

But they say they have now been left in the dark over when any action will be taken.

“I had condensation on the walls, black mould in my flat, because the rooms just don’t get warm,” said Bonnie Grover, who has lived in Hathersage Court for three years. “My heating doesn’t work, even when you have it full on, the room just doesn’t get hot. My personal experience was that the person who was meant to come and fix it came, he didn’t know what he was doing, he said he didn’t know how to fix it, and then the case was closed.”

She added: “I contacted the council about it and they said they would reopen it but nothing happened.

“Whatever heating system we have, the council has not taken it seriously that lots of the residents don’t have heating that works at all. Do people need to save? Will the council accidentally switch the metres on? Will they tell us anything? None of that is clear. The way they’ve interacted with us doesn’t give us confidence that they’ll be transparent or honest with us.”

Council housing chief Una O’Halloran said: “We are now able to offer residents a choice between prepayment and monthly billing.

“We are finalising the proposal and will be in touch shortly with the Tenants and Residents Association with the full details.

“We wrote to all Hathersage Court residents asking that they report any issues with the delivery of heat and hot water. All reported faults have since been resolved but we would encourage anyone experiencing further issues to please report them to us.”
