AN artist is making her debut in the big apple.

Lidia Lidia, a performance artist based in Angel, has had her work chosen to feature on a billboard in New York – on 5th Avenue and 8th Street in Brooklyn.

Save Art Space, an organisation that “works to create an urban gallery experience” put out a worldwide call for artists to apply to be featured on billboards throughout New York.

Lidia says she was “amazed” and “excited” when she heard her work had been chosen. The artwork, “Selfitis”, which was featured in the Tribune in May, went up on Monday and will stay there for a month. It features Lidia’s “Bag Lady” (above) and explores how social media encourages young people to look and act the same.

Lidia is hoping to find an organisation willing to facilitate a workshop based around the message of her work.

She said: “Social media is killing critical thinking in young people. Maybe through this, because I have some visibility, I will be able to do a workshop for young people where we have an open conversation about social media and society.”

Lidia is preparing to work as a performer in the Marina Abramović retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, set to start on September 23. If you’re interested in facilitating Lidia’s workshop, please email at lidia@lidialidia.com
