Council leader Councillor Una O’Halloran hands Adele a new micro scooter
“SWEEPING Beauty” will be the name of Islington’s newest electric street sweeper after a six-year-old pupil at Thornhill Primary School won a borough-wide competition to christen the vehicle.
Adele, helped by her sister, Aylin, won 240 votes from the public for her inspired choice that beat more than 130 suggestions from 16 schools across Islington.
She was pictured being given a new micro scooter as her prize.
Thornhill headteacher Paul Robinson said: “It is fantastic to see one of our own pupil’s creativity celebrated in this way and to see the council making it happen for a healthier, brighter future for our children. As a school we work to embed environmentally friendly habits and encourage children to think about their impacts on future generations.”
Sweeping Beauty will be one of three new sweepers keeping the streets clean, while reducing diesel consumption and saving 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year – equivalent to the energy used to power 15 homes.
Islington’s climate chief Councillor Rowena Champion, said: “We all have a part to play in protecting our environment, and by engaging with young people we are making it happen by creating a lasting impact and a healthier place for all.”
