The council is frightened of debate on low traffic neighbourhoods

Friday, 15th September 2023

• THE council has revealed its plan for the latest LTN, low traffic neighbourhood, in Barnsbury.

Many of us believe it is seriously misguided but we do not, of course, challenge the need for some limited traffic restrictions and share concern about climate change.

But that is not the point.

Islington Council is clearly too frightened to have even one public meeting about this.

The “consultation” is only by booked brief “chats” in the town hall or an online “meeting” which is controlled by the council which can choose whom to allow to speak and whom to mute. Last time none of the consultants designing the scheme even lived in Islington.

The council has very few non-Labour Party councillors, which increases the importance of holding a proper public consultation.

I am a natural supporter of Labour at the next election, but this indifference to democracy makes me wonder how authoritarian a new government may be.

It does not augur well.
