The cyclists’ view on LTNs
Friday, 26th November 2021
• IN the letter (Delay the St Mary’s Church LTN, November 12) from Kate Pothalingam of the Islington Liberal Democrats, we find a quote from the London Cycling Campaign.
I would like to add a later quote from the LCC, clarifying its position on LTNs: “One key part of that implementation that has been much criticised is the ‘lack of consultation’.
“However, as our recent guide to better engagement and consultation with Urban Movement makes clear, the way residents were consulted prior to lockdown wasn’t working well, and using trials to enable residents to see past jargon and incomprehensible top-down schema, to experience the scheme in situ, can be a far better way to engage and consult.”
LTNs are a proven way to create an environment favourable to active travel and reduce motor traffic. I would have hoped the Liberal Democrats to be pro-science. The car-led recovery that was feared in the early days of the pandemic is becoming a sad reality, the lack of physical activity is causing health issues to people of all ages, especially children.
Major cities around the world are facing similar threats and responding in similar ways. I do not want Islington and London to fall behind.
I want an opposition who help facilitate change and lead from the front, unencumbered by the realities of day-to-day council management; not who simply oppose progress in the hope of garnering a few votes from a very vocal minority.
