The effects of the Barnsbury/ Laycock LN will be disastrous

Friday, 20th October 2023

• A TINY minority of Barnsbury and Laycock residents live in the affluent area of Barnsbury where 15 road filters are proposed as part of the council’s LN, liveable neighbourhood, programme.

But the effects will be disastrous for most Islington residents.

Traffic will be diverted onto the boundary roads surrounding the proposed elitist enclave of Barnsbury – Mackenzie Road, Caledonian Road, Copenhagen Street, Upper Street, Liverpool Road and Holloway Road.

There will be longer journeys, more congestion and more pollution.

And the losers?

Those who live in or near these boundary roads where there is a large proportion of social housing; those who need their vehicles to make a living or those who rely on motorised transport for their mobility – the old, disabled and the ill; independent businesses and small shops, many of whom are already worried about longer deliveries times and the impact of this on their businesses.

But is the council listening to us? No, the “ordinary” person is treated with contempt.

At a recent workshop we were told that “businesses need to be educated to use cargo bikes”. Not long before all residents will need to be “re-educated”!
