The greatest team of all time

OPINION: Who has come close to the Arsenal Invincibles?

DON’T send me a Happy Invincibles Day card this year – instead please donate the money you would have spent to a good cause.

The annual festival has got so silly now that it risks losing all meaning, arriving as it has before the pumpkin lanterns have been lit for Halloween and the bonfires of fireworks night.

It’s a whole two weeks earlier than last year. Madness.

Instead of an exchange of gifts, crackers and perhaps an extra tot of brandy, perhaps all of us can just take some time out to reflect on how the Arsenal Invincibles were so monumentally better than any other team that has ever existed.

Maybe we should no longer mark it on the calendar and take it as a given that nobody else is able to even come close to Arsene Wenger’s remarkable golden achievement.

Who could dispute such a conclusion when the current pretenders to greatness cannot even get to the Christmas advent windows without losing a match?

Arsenal went the whole season without a defeat, and yet Tony Adams’ run in Strictly has lasted longer than any of the undefeated runs of these so-called modern powerhouse clubs.

At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has spent impossible amounts of money and acquired a robotic goal machine, and yet still has only been able to get to October before suffering a loss. Jurgen Klopp – he of just one Premier League title success – cashed in his chips on any pursuit of invicibility when Liverpool lost in AUGUST.

Do we mention anybody else? Spurs? Can anybody watch a Spurs match at the moment?

Maybe they could go 38 games without losing a match, simply by making their opponents drowsy with their unique brand of boring football.

But they’d probably have sent their own players into a sleepy comatose state by then. There were even some “Conte Out” tweets this week on the basis of how dull everything they do is.

So – cards on the table, be honest with yourselves – I take it we can all agree now that the Arsenal Invincibles are the greatest team of all time? You might not like it, but who has even come close?

How come Sky brought back Fantasy Football League? While we will be singing Three Lions forever, surely the actual TV programme has been cooked since the blacking up and pineapples used to constantly mock Jason Lee.
Time for something new.
