The May 6 election was a test for views on LTNs
Friday, 14th May 2021
• IN recent months you have printed many letters objecting to low traffic neighbourhoods, LTNs, in general and to the Highbury West one in particular.
The Thursday May 6 by-election was a test of the strength of opposition to LTNs.
It was won by Labour’s Bashir Ibrahim. I do not know his view because I received no communication from Labour regarding the elections but, given that it was his party which brought in LTNs, I assume he is in favour.
The runner-up was the Green Party’s candidate, who expressed support for LTNs in principle but criticised the way that Labour had implemented them. The only candidate unequivocally to oppose LTNs, the Conservative, came bottom of the poll.
This was despite Keep Highbury Moving leafletting Highbury West on April 26 urging voters to, “Question the electoral candidates on their views regarding LTNs and vote in the 6th May Mayoral, London Assembly, and Highbury West Ward elections.”
I forwarded the leaflet to the Returning Officer because the sentence I have quoted makes it, in my view, an election communication; but it did not give the publisher’s and printer’s name and address.
