The pedestrian area could reopen to traffic

Pedestrian crossing just off Highbury Corner
• RATHER than turn Highbury Corner into a roundabout again, why not close the south portion and reopen the west “pedestrianised” area to traffic?
This would improve traffic flow, reduce pollution, and the No 277 bus can come back to Highbury Corner by using the existing south side road as a parking place – there should be space for about three buses.
Emergency vehicles will be able to get through to Holloway Road and St Paul’s Road without the “one or two minutes’ extra transit time” (Transport for London’s prediction for all traffic before the corner reopened last year).
As regards to the bus stop on St Paul’s Road referred to by JE Kirby (When a mistake is made over road changes, they don’t admit it, February 21), the shelter and pavement extension have already been removed, but where can they resite the bus stop?
Another possible accident spot is the pavement outside the 24-hour shop on Highbury Corner/St Paul’s Road. This is a lateral slope, and should winter hit us and ice forms on it. (Snow is forecast as I write), anybody walking along St Paul’s Road could be at risk of a nasty fall.
