The values enshrined in international humanitarian and human rights law are fundamental Jewish values

• WE write as Jewish residents of Islington who believe that the values enshrined in international humanitarian and human rights law are fundamental Jewish values.

We stand in the traditions of Jewish pioneer legal thinkers like Rene Cassin, who drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Hersch Lauterpacht who drafted the indictments for crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg trials and Raphael Lemkin, who defined genocide as a crime and persuaded the United Nations to adopt the convention against it.

So we offer our support and encouragement to the London Borough of Islington pensions committee as they seek to ensure their funds are not used to carry out human rights abuses and war crimes in Palestine, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel.

Like them, and, we hope, like most Islington residents, we want to invest in a just peace.
