Tuesday’s celebrations were just the start regardless of what happens in the European final

SOME of Islington’s most prominent politicians have taken to social media to offer personal congratulations to the prem-winning Arsenal team.

Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn, a long-standing fan of the club, said this week there had been “joy throughout the community”.

“I went down to the stadium, it was so packed you could hardly move. I spent a lot of time with others just chatting and chanting, we had a great time,” he said.

“Lots of people came up to me as I was leaving my house this morning. Somali people, Congolese people, Irish people and English people, and they said to me: ‘isn’t it just great that we’ve won something?’ It was that sort of feeling of the community coming together, and that is just sport at its best.”

Mr Corbyn has tabled an Early Day Motion to the Houses of Parliament offering an official congratulations to the team.

Meanwhile, council leader Una “the Gooner” O’Halloran, also released a statement applauding the team. She said: “The champions of Islington are now the champions of England! We are so proud of the team for bringing home the Premier League title and, on behalf of everyone in our borough, we congratulate them on their success.”

See you at the parade

A PARADE to celebrate the historic trophy win will be taking place across the streets of Highbury on May 31.

Islington Council said the parade will start at 2pm, and that they expect “a large number of visitors” to the borough.

Full details of the route and expected timelines will be released in the coming days.
