This almighty traffic jam said it all

Exhaust diesel fumes

‘The triangle of Blackstock Road / Highbury Grove, Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road is now easily the worst traffic area in London’

• IF ever there was proof of the weakness in the arguments about LTNs it was the almighty jam in the Highbury/ Holloway Road/ Finsbury Park area on May 6.

I know that a major cause was a burst water main in the Holloway Road. But this, combined with the Highbury West LTN, led to near complete standstill of traffic for four hours.

If there was not such an authoritarian approach to the LTN, then some traffic could have been syphoned off along, say, Aubert Park and Drayton Park.

The triangle of Blackstock Road / Highbury Grove, Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road is now easily the worst traffic area in London.

And, by forcing all through-traffic out of the LTN, these three arterial roads, with their constant jams, are also increasingly very polluted. Not great for schools and school kids.

By all means, let’s have some limits and road closures in the Highbury West area, but not this dogmatically introduced, totalitarian, ban.
