St Pancras Old Church car park

‘Every car has a chit from Camden Council… no doubt owners are paying richly for it’

• A BURST of sunshine on Wednesday afternoon, so we are off to the St Pancras Old Church cemetery for a picnic, a beautiful spot a stone’s throw from our council flat.

What confronts us? Cars! Twelve of them parked up for the day.

Londoners resort to parks to get away from cars and their noise and danger and impatient, bad-tempered drivers, and here we are, the place has become a car park. Toddlers can’t roam freely and grown-ups feel abused.

Every car has a chit from Camden Council, of course. And no doubt owners are paying richly for it. But this is not what our parks are for, especially not this one, the oldest consecrated ground in Europe with the Hardy Tree and the tombs of Mary Wollstonecraft and Sir John Soane.

Surely the legality is dubious. Every bit of council propaganda makes claims about greening. But look for yourself, (pictured above). It’s a disgrace.
