People-friendly streets neighbourhood scheme could block residents in

• AS residents of the area to the east of Highbury Fields, the leaflet we received last week from Islington Council about the “Highbury Fields people-friendly streets neighbourhood scheme,” shows that the only legal route available to us to enter or leave the area by car under the new scheme will be Baalbec Road.

Quite apart from other disadvantages from this (for example, longer detours to access Holloway Road, inability to access our only nearby electric vehicle charging point, near the swimming pool, as well as the recycling bins there for larger deposits) it would seem that if, for any reason, Baalbec Road is blocked (emergency works, removals?) there will be no legal way in or out of our enclave. Even without a blockage, the weekly refuse collection could be chaos.

Baalbec Road has cars parked on both sides and is too narrow for two vehicles to pass one another. Any blockage could lead to traffic jams along Highbury Grove as vehicles wait for access, as well as a back-up of traffic along the roads inside the area.

Disabled people who get around by car cannot leave them elsewhere and walk the rest of the way home; similarly those who might rely on taxis to take them to their door, particularly at night.

Since Corsica Street was closed as an entrance to the area for drivers as part of the scheme for the new Highbury Corner, we really need another route in or out.
