THOUSANDS of people gathered to celebrate Eid al-Adha on Wednesday.

Six thousand people from across London came to Highbury Fields for an Eid celebration set up by Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park.

“Families from across London have come to share cultures and traditions from different countries,” said Toufik Kacimi, the founder of Muslim Welfare House.

“We invited the local churches to come along as well. We are bringing communities together and from different faiths to celebrate this day and make it a party.”

The day was spent by families on the funfair rides, tug of war games and having picnics between the sporadic showers of rain. “It feels really warm to have all these Muslims together; it’s nice to be a part of the ceremony,” said Hodan Adan, who attend with her son Elias.

His favourite part of the day was coming together with others for the prayer.

Mohammed and Atosa Ali, both 24, came with their young daughter Soraya. “I have seen a few people here that I have not seen in a long time, said Mr Ali. “I just saw my old Qur’an school Arabic teacher.”

Couple Eessa, 37, and Khaoula Toora, 32, who own Sweets Habibi, were selling treats at the festival.

“As a Muslim community it is very important to have this event to gather together,” said Ms Toora.

They also made sure they spent time with their children Razaan, 4, and Yezan, 1, at the funfair. “It is important, especially for our children, to have this celebration, said Mr Toora.

“The main part is the prayer, for everyone to come together and unite. Then also for the children to spend their money on sweets and the rides.”
