IF you’ve been watching the general election purely through the eyes of Robert Peston and Laura Kuenssberg, complete with all those convenient “sources” who magically guide us through the coverage – you might be missing out on a more rootsier, down-to-earth way into seeing what people are really thinking.

And this week, following Conservative chairman Richard Holden’s embarrassing interview with Sky News, we headed to his new constituency of Basildon and Billericay – it’s said he used a parachute to get there – to see the lay of the land.

You will have heard the speculation that he has gone there to stand in a ‘safe’ Tory seat, but locals had another right-wing figure on their lips when it came to suggesting who they might vote for.
