Sir Sadiq Khan enters the House of Lords

SIR Sadiq Khan – or Lord Sadiq Khan of Tooting – has had a busy week, donning ermine robes to take his place in the unelected second chamber of parliament.

But when he gets back to his desk at City Hall, he is set to get a request from councillors in Islington to extend the “Night Tube” there.

Councillors are due to pass a motion next week urging Transport for London to get the service running on the Bank branch of the Northern line.

Now running for more than 10 years, the night tube operates on Fridays and Saturdays along several lines, including the Victoria and Jubilee, as well as the Charing Cross arm of the Northern line.

The request is being spearheaded by Labour councillor James Potts, whose motion says extending the service would help reduce violence against women and girls by providing better transport routes.

Islington will write directly to Lord Sadiq if the proposal is agreed next week.

The absence of a Bank branch service has previously been blamed on an apparent lack of demand, but Angel and Old Street are being cited as places where people need safe routes home.

The Mayor of London was questioned on the idea as long ago as 2017, when former Liberal Democrat London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon – now also a peer – pressed him for an answer. He said TfL would keep it under review.

Late-night working at Bank station was also raised as a reason for not having the night tube on the line, although that work has long been completed.
